Faculty Expertise

  • The Atlantic Monthly quoted Dr. Deborah Strumsky, assistant professor in the geography and earth sciences department, in the article “How the Crash Will Reshape America.” (March)
  • The New York Times featured department chair and professor of criminal justice Dr. Vivian Lord in the story “3 Cases of ‘Suicide by Cop’? Circumstances Are Murky.” (Apr. 14) Lord was also interviewed on News 14 Carolina about “Charges could still come in fatal CMPD wreck,” (Apr. 13) and on WCNC for the story “39 dead in mass shootings in less than a month.” (Apr. 4)
  • Gregory Weeks, associate professor of political science, published a column in the Raleigh News & Observer, “A highly flawed but fixable program.” (March 26)
  • The research of assistant biology professor Inna Sokolova was highlighted on WFAE in the story “UNC Charlotte scientist helps oysters fight Dermo disease.” (March 20)
  • Mohamed-Ali Hasan, associate professor in the Center for Optoelectronics and Optical Communications, was referenced in the Charlotte Observer’s story “UNCC team vies for world title,” about the UNC Charlotte team led by Hasan at this year’s Global Venture Challenge. Michael Fiddy, professor and director of the Center for Optoelectronics and Optical Communications, was also on the team.
  • Dr. Anita Blanchard, associate professor of psychology, was featured on WFAE’s “Charlotte Talks,” discussing “Social Media.” (March 10)
  • Dr. Dean Kruckeberg, professor and director of the Center for Global Public Relations, was a guest on WFAE’s “Charlotte Talks,” discussing “How do you get the News?” (March 30)
  • The Charlotte Observer reviewed director of the Shakespeare in Action Center Dr. A.J. Hartley’s new book: “‘Act of Will’ plays with words, Hartley’s book is set in what could be, but isn’t, Elizabethan England.” (March 29)
  • Dr. Eric Heberlig, associate professor of political science, was quoted in the Myrtle Beach Sun News in “Effort on to make aid for citizens only.” (March 10)
  • Dr. Robert Kravchuk, professor and chair of political science, was featured on WFAE’s “Charlotte Talks,” discussing “Your Finances: What Now?” (March 23)

College Matters

  • Fox News Charlotte broadcast its morning show from the UNC Charlotte Botanical Gardens to promote the Gardens’ Annual Spring Plant Sale. (Apr. 17)

Alumni and Student Newsmakers

  • Public History graduate student Brandon Lunsford was featured in the Charlotte Observer for his book “Charlotte: Then and Now,” which was recently published. (March 22)
  • WFAE’s “Charlotte Talks” interviewed Yale historian and UNC Charlotte alumna Glenda Gilmore about her book, “Defying Dixie,” to promote her lecture hosted by the history department and the Center for the Study of the New South. (Apr. 6)
