Faculty Expertise

  • Roslyn Mickelson, sociology, was quoted in the New York Times story “District May End N.C. Economic Diversity Program.” (Feb 27)
  • Eddy Souffrant, philosophy, was a guest on WFAE’s “Charlotte Talks,” discussing “A Charlotte Doctor in Haiti.” (Feb. 1)
  • Alan Freitag, public relations, was quoted in the WBTV Prime Time cover story, “Cover Story: Toyota – recall and reputation.” (Feb. 3)
  • Ross Meentemeyer, Center for Applied Geographic Information Science, was featured in the Charlotte Observer story “UNC Charlotte scientist stalks the ‘bird flu’ of trees.” (Feb. 1)
  • Deborah Bosley, English, was quoted in Minyanville.com, “Can Big Banks Really Learn to Speak English?” discussing what’s next for consumer credit. (Feb. 10)
  • Amy Ringwood, biology, was featured in the Charlotte Observer and the (Raleigh) News & Observer story “Searching for the unseen,” regarding research to ensure a healthier ecosystem. (Jan. 25)
  • James Tabor, religious studies, was recently interviewed in three major National Geographic episodes of the “Mysteries of the Bible” series: In Search of the Jesus Tomb; Mysteries of Mary Magdalene; and Who Killed Jesus? He was also featured in the Asheville Citizen-Times article, “How would Jesus worship? Scholar to address Jewishness of Jesus at UNCA.” (Feb. 7) PBS also interviewed Dr. Tabor for its series “Closer to Truth.”
  • Vivian Lord, criminal justice department, was quoted in the Greensboro News & Record in a story “Fired Charlotte cop indicted on sex charges” (Jan. 20) and on Fox News Charlotte regarding “More Indictments Against Ex-CMPD Cop.” (Jan. 26)
  • Richard McAnulty, psychology, comments on teachers who’ve crossed the line with students on WBTV, “Cover Story: Crossing the line.” (Jan. 11)
  • Andy Bobyarchick, geography and earth sciences, comments on the history of earthquakes in the Carolinas on WBTV, “Cover Story: Carolinas’ history of earthquakes.”(Jan. 15)
  • Eric Heberlig, political science, comments on the GOOH movement, grass-roots movement to remove everyone from Congress on WBTV, “Get Out Of Our House.” (Jan. 18)

CLAS News & Events

  • Peter W. Singer, defense expert, visited the College Jan. 21 to discuss his new book “Wired for War” and was quoted in an article in the Charlotte Observer, “Defense expert to talk about robots at war.”
  • Charlotte Business Journal reports that the Charlotte Teachers Institute was awarded a $25,000 grant, “Wells Fargo awards $25K to UNC Charlotte.” (Jan. 15)
  • The “Divining America: Religion in American History” lecture series, featuring lectures by a number of CLAS faculty, was featured in the Charlotte Observer article “The rites of Americans,” which also quoted Julia Robinson-Harmon of the religious studies department. (Jan. 29)

Alumni and Student Newsmakers

  • Several Africana Studies students were quoted in the Charlotte Observer and on WCNC, “Neglected black cemetery a trove of fading history,” and WBTV “Group honors King holiday by cleaning up slave cemetery.”
  • Melissa Fleischer, graduate student in religious studies, who participated in an archaeological dig at Mt Zion this summer, was featured in Biblical Archaeology Review magazine. (January/February)
  • Joey Lemons, Student Government president and history major, refutes opposition to 49ers football in the Charlotte Observer, “C.D. Spangler speaks for himself, not for UNC Charlotte.” (Feb. 12)
