Geography & Earth Sciences Major Chosen for Newman Award

Jacob Huffman, a Geography & Earth Sciences major and Levine Scholar at UNC Charlotte, has been chosen for the Newman Civic Fellows Award.  This national honor recognizes college student leaders who have demonstrated their investment in finding solutions to the challenges that communities face.

“Jacob is an exceptional student who is excelling in his field of study and in finding ways to contribute to our community of scholars,” said Craig Allan, chair of the Geography & Earth Sciences Department. “We are impressed with how thoughtful he is and how he already is pursuing opportunities for research and international studies. We are so pleased he is being recognized by others as the outstanding person he is.”

Jacob is focused on community and regional planning, including Geographic Information Systems. This summer he will intern at Chicago State University and work with faculty and graduate students engaged in GIS surveys.  He will deepen his understanding of urban development and neighborhood  revitalization at the Fredrick Blum Neighborhood Assistance Center.

At UNC Charlotte, Jacob is an active member of the club Concerts & Causes. Within the club, Jacob holds the position of talent buyer, which requires him to book, organize and operate concerts, with performances by both nationally recognized and local acts. All proceeds from shows and performances are donated to other non-profit organizations. 

In the coming semesters, Jacob will be an exchange student, learning about governance and efficient and environmentally sensitive planning in Lancaster, United Kingdom.
