Karen Cox, professor of history, was interviewed for HistoryNet’s article, ‘Judge pauses removal of Confederate Memorial at Arlington Cemetery.’

A federal judge in Alexandria, Virginia, issued a temporary restraining order to halt the removal of a Confederate memorial in Arlington National Cemetery, one of the most prominent Confederate monuments on public land.

The memorial was funded by the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC), an organization founded in 1894 which helped promote the Lost Cause ideology. By allowing the burial of Confederate soldiers in Arlington and “accepting the monument to honor them, the federal government had fulfilled the Daughters’ conditions for reconciliation,” Cox said.
