Meghan Davenport on Charlotte Talks panel discussing the right time to retire

Categories: In the News

Meghan Davenport, assistant professor of Psychological Sciences, was a panelist on WFAE’s Charlotte Talks with Mike Collins.

In discussing how to separate your identity from work after retirement, Davenport said “In certain industries… the assumption is that ‘I’ll never be able to retire’ so you kind of operate that way, thinking that it’s not even in my plan financially.”

“For those of us lucky enough to envision retirement and plan for it [the answer is to build new parts of your identity] as soon as we can. Having a diverse group around you, having different activities, different options of people to engage with and things to do– the earlier the better that we can build a robust, non-work identity, will help ease that transition,” said Davenport.
