Jeanette Bennett, associate professor of Psychological Science, provided tips for “layoff anxiety” for the 7 in 10 workers who fear facing job changes in a recent survey.

A surprise layoff can easily damage your sense of identity and self-esteem, while ratcheting up your stress levels. To combat these feelings, Bennett said implementing healthy coping strategies is critical. 

“Maintaining social connections with loved ones, trusted coworkers or a support group allows you to process complex emotions instead of isolating yourself,” Bennett said. “Focusing on activities that bring you joy and fulfillment outside of work can also boost your overall well-being during this difficult period.”
