Eric Heberlig on why ‘NC’s Great Migration Did Not Change Political Landscape As Some Expected’

Eric Heberlig, professor in the Department of Political Science and Public Administration, was interviewed by WCCB News to unpack why North Carolina’s ‘great migration’ did not alter the results of the presidential election.
Donald Trump won North Carolina for the third straight presidential election, despite some believing that the hundreds of thousands moving from more liberal states like California and New York would impact the voting landscape.
“Just because people are migrating from a blue state doesn’t mean they’re blue voters,” explained Heberlig. “If you have younger voters who are moving in for jobs, who are typically more democratic, they’re less likely to show up to vote than those older retirees.”
