Margaret M. Quinlan, Ph.D., professor of communication studies and director of the health & medical humanities program, was interviewed for ‘Why manufacturers should note rising PCOS levels’ from FoodNavigator USA.

With rising levels of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), for which no cure exists, women affected have turned to dietary changes to manage symptoms. While food manufacturers have an opportunity to fill the growing dietary requirements, influencers are currently steering the conversation around what works best, often without scientific backing.

“Folks are buying stuff the people they follow recommend,” said Quinlan. “The best bet for companies trying to make money is to work with doctors or people with 10k plus followers to recommend their products.” 

As research on PCOS continues, additional studies are needed to support what supplements and dietary changes are most effective and how to effectively communicate to consumers.
