Rogelberg honored with North Carolina’s top volunteerism award

Chancellor’s Professor Steven G. Rogelberg has been honored with the 2026 North Carolina Governor’s Medallion Award for Volunteer Service, the state’s highest recognition for extraordinary community impact. The award, presented by VolunteerNC in Raleigh on May 11, celebrates individuals whose service strengthens communities across North Carolina.

Rogelberg was nominated through Mecklenburg County’s process, supported by the United Way of Greater Charlotte, in recognition of his leadership across several major community‑focused initiatives.

Rogelberg leads the annual Care Conference, which supports front‑line professionals assisting residents facing housing instability, unemployment, and economic hardship. The 2026 conference brought together 156 care providers from 24 organizations for renewal, connection, and professional development.

He also launched the CARE Institute of Leadership in 2025, offering six months of leadership coaching to first‑line leaders serving the unhoused or those at risk of homelessness.

A professor of Organizational Science, Management, and Psychology, Rogelberg is a nationally recognized scholar with more than 200 publications and over $2.5 million in external funding. His research on teams, leadership, and workplace well‑being has been featured by major media outlets and informed testimony before the U.S. Congress. Beyond academia, his consulting and outreach efforts have supported nearly 10,000 nonprofit organizations.

“The challenges our communities face can feel overwhelming,” Rogelberg said. “But together, through small and meaningful acts, we can move the needle.”
