In the College of Humanities & Earth and Social Sciences, our advising staff are highly trained professionals who are here to support you in meeting your academic goals. Advising should be a partnership between the student and the academic advisor. CHESS advisors work with students from the point of your first advising session as you onboard into the university all the way up until graduation.

Schedule appointments early. Arrive on time!Provide accurate, proactive, holistic advising in a timely manner.
Prepare for your advising appointment (make a list of questions, tentative courses you wish to take and experiences you want to take a part in such as LEADS, Education abroad, Early Entry, research, etc.).Help you maximize your student experience with recommendations that can support your academic and career goals.
Keep lines of communication open – Read ALL emails and take action when needed. Reach out when you have questions.Empower you to make independent and informed decisions. We are here to provide assistance and advice but this is YOUR degree so you are in the driver’s seat of your education.
Know and adhere to academic deadlines and policies.Encourage engagement in your advising process and make referrals when appropriate.
