Rogelberg Receives First Citizens Bank Scholars Medal for Research
UNC Charlotte Chancellor’s Professor Steven Rogelberg is the 2019 recipient of the First Citizens Bank Scholars Medal, UNC Charlotte’s most prestigious faculty award in recognition of excellence in research. He was honored formally at an awards ceremony Tuesday, April 2, at the Harris Alumni Center at Johnson Glen.
Since 1987, the University annually, with the support from First Citizens Bank, presents this award to recognize and foster the advancement and diffusion of knowledge and creative endeavors.
Rogelberg, a pioneering organizational science researcher and professor of management and psychology, has authored more than 100 publications that address issues such as team effectiveness, leadership, engagement, health and employee well-being, meetings at work and organizational research methods. He is editor of the Journal of Business and Psychology and the Talent Management Essentials book series and has received more than $2 million of external grant funding, including from the National Science Foundation.
Rogelberg’s newest book, “The Surprising Science of Meetings: How You Can Lead Your Team to Peak Performance” was recognized recently by the Washington Post as the “No. 1 leadership book to watch for in 2019” and by the Business Insider as one of the “Top 14 business books everyone will be reading in 2019.”
He also founded and currently directs two large outreach initiatives, spanning eight universities, focusing on nonprofit organization effectiveness with 1,000-plus nonprofits served.
“Steven Rogelberg is a visionary in seeing what needs attention, what could be and what should be,” said Mikki Hebl, the Martha and Henry Malcolm Lovett Professor of Psychology at Rice University.
Rogelberg completed a bachelor’s degree from Tufts University; his Ph.D. in Industrial and Organizational Psychology is from the University of Connecticut. He was the recipient of the 2017 Humboldt Research Award. Named for the late Prussian naturalist and explorer Alexander von Humboldt, the award is considered one of the most esteemed honors presented to a scientist.
“For 32 years now, First Citizens and UNC Charlotte have come together to honor the outstanding achievements of an exceptional faculty member,” said Kim Allred, senior vice president for First Citizens Bank. “We’re proud to collaborate with the University this year to recognize Dr. Rogelberg for the immense contributions his research is having within the fields of organizational science, management and psychology. This award truly reflects our bank’s ‘Forever First’ commitment to the people and communities we serve. We’re honored to help highlight the University and the lasting contributions of a well-deserving scholar.”
