Political Science, History Major Engages In Scholarship, Service
Christian Rios is a double major in political science and history with a minor in American studies. His involvement on campus ranges from being a Niner guide, previously a Student Senator and now the current Student Government Association chief of staff. He also participates in the Mock Trial club and works in the Popp Martin Student Union as a reservation specialist. As a senior, he will be the first in his family to obtain a high school diploma and to graduate with a bachelor’s degree.
Rios also works in the Law Offices of Timothy J Pavone, conducting client interviews, maintaining general contact with clients, conducting research, summarizing depositions, and aiding in interrogatories and testimonies.
“Beside working in the field of law, which I’m extremely interested in, and aspire to one day work in, this job provides amazing learning opportunities,” Rios said. “Each day that I’ve worked, my overall abilities in critical thinking, reading, and analyzing are improving immensely. This job has been a dream come true. Some day, when I go off to law school, these real life experiences are going to greatly help me in navigating my experiences as a law school student.”

What are your favorite places on campus and what do you love about UNC Charlotte?
I would personally say Atkins Library because it is an academic and socially dynamic environment. No matter when I visit there, I always see people I know from my classes and extracurriculars. Fretwell is definitely on my list since it is the building that houses my major and many clubs such as mock trial. Thoughtful Cup is another great aspect of Fretwell. It is a space where I can get homework done and helps me start a productive day. Regardless of how large the UNC Charlotte campus is, there are friends around and a ton of events happening.
Where is your favorite place to eat on campus and what do you get?
Chick-fil-A without a doubt. I usually get a spicy sandwich, Cheerwine and medium waffle fries. Nothing beats sitting outside Prospector on a cool autumn day, eating Chick-fil-A and watching the squirrels play.
What three words describe UNC Charlotte?
Opportunities, friendships and potential.
What advice do you have for new students?
Do not stay in your comfort zone or dorm. Get involved, join many clubs. This gives you a foundation that will help you gain experience and confidence that you cannot obtain anywhere else. It quite literally can shape your college career and provide you with countless benefits that have transferability into your desired field.
What’s a fun fact about you many people may not know?
I have spent 26 consecutive hours in Atkins Library. This was during my thesis which served as the capstone for my political science major. A lot of people ask how I did it, and the secret was energy drinks.
