Katherine Idzoriek interviewed as UNC Charlotte leads ‘heat mapping’ campaign

Categories: In the News

Katherine Idzoriek, assistant professor of geography and community planning in the Department of Earth, Environmental and Geographical Sciences discussed the upcoming Charlotte Heat Mappers campaign. Idzoriek will lead a team of UNC Charlotte researchers and community volunteers on a day-long collection of heat and humidity readings through the city to help identify urban “heat islands.”

Idzoriek said with the data they are “hoping to identify areas hotter than others, and this will help to inform actions where we might sight cooling centers, where we might prioritize planting more trees, where we might add additional bus shelters. There are a number of mitigation actions that can be taken to lessen the impact of urban heat.”
