Martha Kropf, professor in the Department of Political Science and Public Administration, was quoted in the article ‘More than just annoying, NC voters should beware of fake and illegal campaign texts and robocalls’ by the Carolina Public Press.

With less than one month left until the North Carolina primary election, political campaigns will be increasing efforts to get voters to the polls through text messages and robocalls. However, voters should be aware of potential scam calls, after scammers used robocalls with an AI-generated voice impersonating President Joe Biden to advise voters not to vote during the New Hampshire primary in January.

In response, the Federal Communications Commission has made it illegal to make robocalls using AI-generated voices. However, experts are concerned that older North Carolina voters will fall victim to scammers.

“It’s really important that people find trusted sources of information and my biggest worry with text is it would be very easy to do a big misinformation campaign just on pure election administration stuff,” said Kropf. “Always be cautious.”
