Jill E. Yavorsky among experts interviewed on ‘everything showers’ by CNN Health

Jill E. Yavorsky, Ph.D., associate professor of sociology and organizational science, contributed to CNN Health’s article, ”10-step ‘everything shower’: Influencers think you need one, but experts disagree.”

On social media platforms including TikTok and Instagram, content creators document extensive shower routines referred to as “everything showers.” These showers have lengthy pre- and post-shower steps and are framed as an essential way to unwind and refresh each week. 

Influencers posting content revolving around everything showers are primarily women, and they recommend large amounts of products to their followers to use. However, health experts note that shower routines do not need to be so complex to be effective. 

“It’s likely true that some women might get real enjoyment out of doing some of these things. As other scholars have argued, ‘doing your gender’ can bring enjoyment for people,” said Yavorsky. “At the same time, I think it can be a slippery slope for combining women’s leisure and relaxation time with activities predominantly aimed to enhance their appearance.”
