Message from the Dean

Hello, and welcome to the College of Humanities & Earth and Social Sciences, known as CHESS.

My office provides a structure for the academic departments and research centers at UNC Charlotte that ask some of humanity’s greatest questions. What is the nature of consciousness? What does environmental sustainability look like? How do societies organize themselves and engage with the world around them? 

But we don’t just ask questions, we also give you the tools to navigate an ever-evolving employment landscape. We learn in classrooms (of course!) but also in the field, across our city, and throughout the globe. Many CHESS students hold professional internships or participate in community-engaged research projects.
