Fans of comic books, graphic novels, and manga gathered on June 15-17 at the Charlotte Convention Center for the annual Heroes Convention. In a “Monday Missive” blog posting, English Department Chair Mark West took a moment to discuss the use of sequential art to tell stories.

College Mourns Death of Dr. Dan White

J. Daniel White, Jr., described as a guru in the original sense of the word and a significant part of the history of UNC Charlotte, passed away on June 12, 2018 following a brief illness. A memorial service will be held at 2 PM on Saturday, June 23 at Myers Park Baptist Church. 

CLAS Students, Faculty Among Those Who Joined In D-Day Commemoration

From planting American flags at Omaha Beach in Normandy, France, to performing ‘Amazing Grace’ at the Brittany American Cemetery and Memorial, members of the Pride of Niner Nation are representing UNC Charlotte and the United States at the 74th commemoration of D-Day. Over 40 of the student musicians are majors or double-majors in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences.

Alumna Receives Prestigious Award for Doctoral Work

Alumna Amy Kennemore – who faculty recall as a rising star – is one of 21 Charlotte Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellows for 2018; this honor is presented by the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation. 

Undergraduates, Faculty Collaborate in Summer Research Experiences

This summer, dozens of College of Liberal Arts & Sciences undergraduate students from varied majors and disciplines will gain experience in research through UNC Charlotte initiatives that emphasize learn-by-doing models. They also will benefit from professional development opportunities, mentoring and interactions with each other.

English Graduate Student Named Top Teaching Assistant

Kevin Chauncey, a master’s student in English, received the UNC Charlotte Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant Award, presented by the Graduate School. The award honors students nominated by faculty supervisors for their work as teaching assistants, recognizing outstanding and innovative teaching techniques.

Philosopher Receives Fellowship to Study Structural Racism, Linguistic Communication

Andrea Pitts, an assistant professor in the Department of Philosophy at UNC Charlotte, has received a six-month Career Enhancement Fellowship from the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation. With the fellowship, Pitts will work on a book project in fall 2018, analyzing structural racism and linguistic communication.

Religious Studies Professor Publishes Enoch Volume

John Reeves, Blumenthal Professor of Judaic Studies, and Annette Yoshiko Reed of New York University have published a work they hope will provide historians of religion with a new tool to explore the intertextual relationships between different religious corpora and the intertwined histories of the major religious communities of the ancient and medieval Near East.

English Alumnus Honored With Teaching Excellence National Award

South Point High School English teacher Bobbie Cavnar describes teaching as 25 percent preparation and 75 percent pure theater.  Lately, the UNC Charlotte alumnus has taken his place on the national stage, sharing his views of teaching, the humanities, the arts and issues confronting the nation’s schools.
