John Reeves, Blumenthal Professor of Judaic Studies in the Department of Religious Studies, has received a prestigious American Council of Learned Societies Fellowship for 2015-16 to work on his project “Illuminating the Afterlife of Ancient Apocryphal Jewish Literature.”

When people consider biodiversity, they often think of far-flung Amazon rainforests or vibrant coral reefs in tropical seas. While biodiversity ranks high on the global scale, it is also vital to the health of humans and the environment at the local level, something that UNC Charlotte doctoral student Angelique Hjarding is addressing through her research and creation of the Butterfly Highway project.

UNC Charlotte undergraduate students Keegan Cary and Emma Franz will deepen their knowledge and understanding of the world through an immersive semester-long study abroad experience in Spain, as the 2015 Odyssean Scholarship recipients.

Derrick Griffith, a UNC Charlotte alumnus who was completed his bachelor’s degree in history and was an outstanding student leader in the early 1990s, has been identified as one of seven people killed in an Amtrak train derailment in Philadelphia on Tuesday, May 12, as the train headed to New York.

Michèle Bissière, associate professor of French in the Department of Languages and Culture Studies at UNC Charlotte, has received two prestigious national and international awards for her teaching and commitment to raising the prestige of French culture.

On April 23, Air Force ROTC hosted its annual Parade and Awards Ceremony in front of the Self Made Man statue at UNC Charlotte. This ceremony is rich in tradition as an opportunity for individuals to see the precise marching of military members.

For their outstanding teaching work, two UNC Charlotte graduate students from the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences have received the 2015 Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant Awards from the Graduate School and Center for Graduate Life.

Students from the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences earned top honors for their research at UNC Charlotte’s 15th annual Graduate Research Symposium, held in April, 2015 in the J. Murrey Atkins Library. This year’s theme, “Learning Across Disciplines,” emphasized the interdisciplinary nature of the symposium.

With their naming as the 2015 Pharr/Buchenau Travel Grant recipients, UNC Charlotte history graduate students Chris Kinley and Marissa Nichols will travel abroad to study Greece and World War I and the impact of the 1942 smallpox epidemic in Mexico.

UNC Charlotte researcher Akin Ogundiran has been named a Fellow at the National Humanities Center for the upcoming academic year, in one of the most competitive fellowship programs in the world. He will join 36 other distinguished scholars from 32 institutions across the United States and eight foreign countries working on a wide array of projects.
