Many elementary students’ math performance improves when their teachers collaborate, work in professional learning communities or do both, yet most students don’t spend all of their elementary school years in these settings, a new study by UNC Charlotte researchers shows. 30 German majors from UNC Charlotte are studying in Germany this summer and in the 2013-14 academic year. Each student received a $2,000 scholarship to undertake immersive language study in a German-speaking country at one of the locations of the prestigious Goethe Institute. Kurt Waldthausen, founder and president of the GLCF, presented the scholarships.

Harvard University Press in late March 2013 released Daniel Shealy’s new book, Little Women: An Annotated Edition. This lavishly illustrated book is full of insightful annotations.

A poem collection by Tanure Ojaide, Frank Porter Graham Professor of Africana Studies, has been published. African Heritage Press published the collection, titled “Love Gifts.”

The University of Iowa Press has just released Paula Connolly’s book, Slavery in American Children’s Literature, 1790-2010. Reviewers have said the book is a “tour de force” with text that “dazzes in its scope and insights.”

UNC Charlotte’s Ray Atkinson was one of 12 community leaders to win a Community Sustainability Award in April, presented by Sustain Charlotte for his work as president of the cyclists club at UNC Charlotte.

The Charlotte Action Research Project (CHARP) is hosting a Neighborhood Campus Forum on Wednesday May 29 at 5:45 p.m. in Cone University Center 210. Students, faculty and staff are invited. CHARP is a partnership between UNC Charlotte and local Charlotte communities. CHARP’s mission is to match UNC Charlotte students with service learning opportunities through action research in challenged Charlotte neighborhoods and, in the process, develop mutually beneficial partnerships.

Michael S. Doyle, a professor of Spanish and translation studies at UNC Charlotte, will join the United States Air Force Academy faculty in Colorado Springs, Colo. as a Distinguished Visiting Professor from July 1, 2013 through May 28, 2014.
