- Karen L. Cox, associate professor in the History Department and author of the recently published book Dreaming of Dixie: How the South was Created in American Popular Culture (UNC Press, 2011), was featured in The New York Times on September 17, 2011. Her op-ed, “The South Ain’t Just Whistlin’ Dixie,” intelligently discusses the intersection of reality TV and Southern stereotypes against a backdrop of the complex and changing dynamics that characterize today’s South.
- Criminology professor Dr. Paul Friday, was quoted in The Charlotte Observer story “Teens smoke less, binge drink more.” (June 23)

- Dennis Ogburn, Anthropology, was quoted in The National Geographic cover story, “Inca Empire.” (Apr. 2011)
- Paula Gross and Larry Mellichamp, Biology, were featured in The Charlotte Observer article, “Wacky and Wonderful Plants.”(Mar. 29) Mellichamp was also featured in The Charlotte Observer article, “Flora dines on unwary fauna.”(Apr. 17)
- The dedication of The Fallen Heroes Memorial at Memorial Hall (which houses the UNC Charlotte Army and Air Force ROTC programs) was featured in The Charlotte Observer article, “To honor UNCC’s fallen heroes.” (Apr. 14) The memorial event was also featured on New14 Carolina and WBTV.
- Cheryl Hicks, History, was on WFAE’s “Charlotte Talks,” discussing “The History of White People,” with author Nell Irvin Painter, in advance of her talk, hosted by the Center for the Study of the New South. (Apr. 14)
- Jonathan Marks, Anthropology, was discussed in the “PLoSBlogs” story, “Anthropologists United- Two responses to Kuper & Marks.” (Apr. 5)
