Charlotte Community Remembers Geography and Earth Sciences Faculty Member Harry Campbell
Harrison (Harry) Sherwood Campbell Jr., a professor in the Department of Geography and Earth Sciences, died Saturday, Oct. 8. A celebration of life will be held Friday, Oct. 14, at Heritage Funeral Home, 3700 Forest Lawn Drive, Matthews, North Carolina. The family will receive friends beginning at 5 p.m., followed by a celebration of life starting at 6 p.m.
University Mourns Death of Political Scientist, Retired Department Chair
Professor Emeritus Theodore (Ted) Self Arrington, a renowned political scientist widely recognized for his expertise and who served in several leadership roles at UNC Charlotte, passed away on Jan. 12 with family members by his side.
Community Mourns Death Of Colleague Susan Gardner
Associate Professor Emeritus Susan Gardner died on January 2, 2022 after an extensive illness. Gardner joined UNC Charlotte’s English Department in 1990 and had taught in the United States, South Africa, Denmark, and New Guinea. Colleagues described Gardner as a strong advocate for diversity and global engagement who was vibrant, thoughful, kind, and generous to students and colleagues. A memorial service is planned for later in the spring.
College Mourns Passing of Longtime Psychological Science Colleague
Associate Professor Emeritus Charles Denton (Denny) Fernald died October 5, 2021 at the age of 77 following a year of care provided by Hospice of the Blue Ridge. Professor Emeritus David Hartgen Passes Away, Leaving Legacy In Transportation Studies
Professor Emeritus David Hartgen passed away on May 22, 2021. From 1989 to 2006, Dr. Hartgen was Professor of Transportation in the Department of Geography and Earth Sciences at UNC Charlotte.
Shawn Long Remembered For A Joyous Life Of Leadership, Service, Friendship
Shawn Long, a beloved colleague who served UNC Charlotte and the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences (CLAS) for almost two decades as a faculty member and administrator, passed away on Jan. 14 following a serious illness. Long joined Kennesaw State University in Georgia as Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences in July 2019. Colleagues and friends describe a focused, inspirational leader, teacher, and mentor with a huge heart who made sure people were heard, accepted, and appreciated.

Bonnie E. Cone Distinguished Professor of Teaching Emeritus John Lincourt passed away on December 14, 2020 at the age of 79. Lincourt, described as a gifted teacher , was a faculty member in the Department of Philosophy and founding director of the Center for Professional and Applied Ethics.
CLAS Mourns Death of Religious Studies Professor Emeritus
Dr. Jeffrey Meyer, professor emeritus in the Department of Religious Studies, died at his Davidson home on Dec. 17 at the age of 82. He retired from UNC Charlotte in 2008 after teaching in the department for 35 years, with a focus on Asian religions. He also served as chair of the Department of Religious Studies from 1992 to 1998.
English Professor Emeritus Remembered By Colleagues
John R. McNair, professor emeritus in the Department of English at UNC Charlotte, died on November 3, 2020, in Wilmington, North Carolina. McNair played an instrumental role in founding the English Department’s offerings in technical communication.

Dr. Mary T. Harper, who played a pivotal role in mentoring and teaching students at UNC Charlotte, developing African American studies at the university, and in preserving the African American story in the Charlotte community, died on October 1, 2020.
