Geology Students to Step Outside Classroom, Back in Time
Students in UNC Charlotte geologist William Garcia’s classes can imagine they have stepped back in time to the Mesozoic era, as they follow an interactive path of dinosaur footprints newly installed on the university campus. His students and others on campus are now able to step outside the customary lecture-based classroom setting and participate in a hands-on, kinesthetic learning experience.
Recipe For Reflection: Transcriptions Give View Of Earlier Times
In the fragile pages of recipe books from the early modern period, UNC Charlotte researcher Jennifer Munroe and her students find traces of life and death. They decipher the words and absorb the daily struggles and joys of the women who created these chronicles of life between 1550 and 1800. These books are much more than repositories for recipes. Through the process of transcription, scholars worldwide are digitizing images of each page of old books, transcribing the vocabulary and script and publishing the content in online databases for the world to study and share.
CTI Names 104 Fellows, Four CLAS Seminar Leaders
Charlotte Teachers Institute has named 104 Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools teachers as CTI Fellows to participate in its innovative, interdisciplinary seminars for 2016. CTI seminars are led by eight faculty experts in the arts, sciences and education, including five from UNC Charlotte – with four from the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences.

In recognition of their exceptional teaching, Allison Hutchcraft, Susan Hodge and Joseph Kuhns have received the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences’ Excellence in Teaching Awards for 2016.
MPA Program Ranks Among the Best Public Affairs Programs Nationwide
UNC Charlotte’s Gerald G. Fox Master of Public Administration program has ranked in the top 100 programs in the nation by U.S. News and World Report. The MPA program continued its strong ranking in the 2017 “Best Graduate Schools” rankings released in March 2016, landing at No. 63.
College Faculty To Lead CTI 2016 Seminars
College of Liberal Arts & Sciences faculty will lead Charlotte Teachers Institute 2016 seminars on a wide variety of engaging, interdisciplinary topics for Charlotte-Mecklenburg teachers from all grade levels and subject areas. CTI recently announced its new seminars, which also will be led by faculty members from UNC Charlotte College of Education and Davidson College.

2015 Research Funding, Books Contribute to Research, Teaching, Engagement
In a significant contribution to research, teaching and engagement at UNC Charlotte, faculty in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences in 2015 published 30 scholarly and creative books that represented subjects as diverse as the College itself. Most of the books are intended primarily for classroom use or as resources for further research, while several of the books are intended for general audiences.

For its broad-ranging “convocation to commencement” approach to advising, the Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology has earned the Provost’s Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Academic Advising. The department helps students reach their full academic potential, Provost Joan Lorden said.
