UNC Charlotte poets are thinking and writing about the impact of challenging times on the human spirit. Some of their poems address COVID-19 directly, and all of the poetry considers people’s responses to times of trouble and change.

Growing up in the tiny mountain town of Hayesville, N.C., the community library became Misty Morin’s refuge, and books became her window to the wider world. In September, Morin will travel to Spain, where she will share her love of language through a Fulbright English Teaching
Assistantship, teaching English to students in La Rioja in the city
of Logroño.

Anita West Moss, 74, professor of English, died Wednesday, April 11 following a brief illness. Described as an avid reader, lover of fine film and theater, enlightened conversationalist, and progressive intellectual, Moss joined UNC Charlotte’s Department of English in 1972 and continued teaching until a week before her death.

The Department of English and Chemistry Associate Professor Thomas Schmedake have earned awards of excellence from Provost Joan Lorden for their commitment to students and citizens of the region. Lorden presented the Award for Excellence in Teaching to the English Department and the Faculty Award for Community Engagement to Schmedake.

College of Liberal Arts & Sciences alumna Tisha Greene, principal of the Oakhurst STEAM Academy, has received the 2017 Outstanding Administrator Award from the North Carolina Science, Mathematics, and Technology Education Center. Greene received a bachelor’s degree in English and a master’s degree in English education from UNC Charlotte.
